When the original Patapon hit the PSP in February of 2008, some gamers were taken by surprise. Here was, after all, a rhythm-based game featuring the art work of French artist Rolito, and combining action commands with a sequence of musical rhythms. It was fresh, it was cute and it was a lot of fun to play.
Well, SCEA Japan is back at it with Patapon 2, a game that is more expansive (200% bigger than the original) with new environments, new characters and the same great gameplay elements.
Patapon 2 begins with the tribe’s continuing search for Earthend. After having exhausted adventure opportunities on its own island, the Patapons have decided to venture off across the waters. Well, things don’t go as planned and the Patapons’ ship is beset by foul sea monsters, crushed and sent to the bottom of the ocean. You begin with one Patapon washed ashore holding the sacred drum. Of course, your little buddy recognizes you as the deity and the great one who will save the tribe and lead it to glory again and surrenders the drum to you. You use the hotkeys to initiate and configure the drum beats.
Remember, this is a rhythm-based game and that means you have to have some sense of rhythm. Just thumbing through the hot-key sequence is not good. You have to pay attention to the tempo of the rhythm and press the buttons at the right time to move the Patapons. Not only does the drum move them along, but a different beat will have them attacking. But this is not merely a case of one drum beat to move and another to attack. Nope, the dev team is sneaky and there are tactical elements in the game and drum beats that will set your strategy. Three new drum beats have been added to the game, but that’s not all.
There is a new customizable Patapon character, a Hero Patapon, plus other new classes that include bird riders and magicians. There are new lands to discover, new weapons to find, resources to collect … well, for a side-scrolling adventure, this game has a lot to offer.
The graphics are more vibrant than the last outing, but still feature the same endearing little characters. And they way the Patapons interact with the player is still wonderful.
The game also features role-playing elements as you can level up your tribe members, and multiplayer is around with game-sharing elements. There are more than 80 missions and 22 bosses to work through.
While the graphics are definitely cute eye candy, the sound of the game will envelop the player and have you humming the rhythms out even when not playing the game.
Patapon 2 is slated for release in the late spring/early summer of this year and should be as much of a hit as the original.
